What Is Qi — and Why Should a Nurse Care About It?

Quote card reading "Health is a journey, not a destination" over a flowing golden ribbon, representing the movement of Qi

One of my Qigong mentors once told me something that's stayed with me ever since: the old Daoist masters believed what moved the heart from stillness to beating was Qi.

Western medicine can explain the how — the earliest heart cells firing on their own. It struggles with the why. In Chinese medicine, that first spark has a name.

As a registered nurse who's spent a career fluent in both worlds, I get this question often — what is Qi, and where's the science? Short answer: cortisol, heart rate variability, immune function. The body responds to Qigong whether or not you have a name for what's happening while it responds.

This is just the beginning of the thread — I follow it further on Substack. Read the full piece on Substack.

If this is speaking to something in you, come move it through your body. I teach Qigong Thursdays and Saturdays at 9:30am at Collective Wellness of Summerville — no experience needed, just come as you are. Reserve your spot.
